3 out of 5 stars
This is one of those independent films that critic's have fallen in love with but the general population hasn't heard of. With all of my obsessive checking of different film blogs I heard of this movie over the summer but never got to see it until it was released on DVD a few weeks ago.
It is a fairly dark and gritty film about a 17 year old girl who has to go find her father who skipped bail or she and her family will lose their house that he put up as collateral. As a result this takes her through the slums of the area and she encounters people that no one would ever want to come across. She is the entire reason to see the film because I predict she will be around for a while (she reminds me of a younger Kiera Knightly so I LOVE)!!!
The main character portrayed by newcomer Jennifer Lawrence is the entire movie and she deserves every Best Actress nomination she earns. She is a force to be had on screen but in my opinion that is about it. I thought it was almost too cliche how everyone was against her discovering the truth and her father. I did love the ending, very poetic but you see it coming from the beginning when everyone tells her what happened to him.
I always find it interesting how they find actors and actresses for these type movies that just looks so small town area, they are not glamorous or drop dead gorgeous. Instead they look like everyday people you would see if you went to Walmart and yet they can act almost better than Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt (whom I both love).
This movie has a very good chance of being nominated for Oscars so if you are an awards junkie like myself I recommend seeing this movie otherwise it will probably not be your piece of pie. It is a movie that most people will not like (at times it is not gory but very close-- they cut off someone's hand with a chainsaw) so be prepared and you have been warned.
