Review: Bicycle Thieves

Review:
4 out of 5 stars

This movie is one that is growing on me the longer since I watched it. It is a foreign language film from the 1940s. It is on a lot of lists of the best movies ever made. Oddly, I did not feel the language barrier was a problem (there were subtitles) because the raw emotion on the actors' faces was enough for me to realize how much pain they were in.

The movie is about a man who needs a bicycle in order to get a certain job during hard times in Italy. His wife pawns some items in order to get the money to buy the bicycle. He finally gets it and the family is so happy but then a thief steals it and all the hopes are ruined. The man goes around to try and find the bicycle and finally thinks he found the thief. This leads to a big climatic scene that does not disappoint. The ending is heart breaking and yet gives hope for the future.

I love how raw the movie was and how much emotion was in it. You begin to care for the characters and want the man to find the bike. You realize if he does not find the bike he will not get the job and the family will starve to death.

I believe in watching movies from all parts of the world because American Cinema might be one of the best in the world but other countries have great movies. This movie is one of the best Italian films I have scene.

At times the subtitles were hard to follow because I would get bored reading but I would just pay attention to the characters and what I was seeing and I made up my own dialogue which usually want to what was being written.

I do recommend this movie and it is suitable for children if they are into reading subtitles. It is a great movie which can teach you about not stealing and seeing the consequences to ones actions.

If you ever see this let me know what you think!
