Review: The Secret of Kells

Review:
3.5 out of 5

The Secret of Kells is an animated movie that was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Oscars last year. It was a surprise nomination that most people did not expect. It is an Irish and French film but it is entirely done in English (so no need for subtitles).

At best it is a beautiful film-- absolutely gorgeous shots and the animation is very different from the computer generated things we see today. This is the type of animation I LOVE!!! The story was hard to follow at times but mainly because I did not understand the Irish story it came from. I like to consider myself a history buff but I am definitely not up on my Irish history from the 900s-- go figure.

It is about a town trying to protect a secret book and keep it going from one generation to another. But in that process a group of people (the Vikings I think) come in and start to burn the town down and they might just capture the book. The story became easier to follow as I started to realize those parts of the plot.

The voicing was amazing and very convincing and the characters were people I could connect with. The ending was my favorite part because of seeing the boy return to the town he once lived in and the final revelation was amazingly well written and voiced.

I do recommend this movie and it is fairly appropriate for children-- in terms of the USA standard of rating movies this is rated PG because of some of the violence themes. It was a fun movie to watch-- even if it would not have been in my top 5 animated movies from last year. But it definitely would have been in the top 10 animated movies (considering only 16 came out last year- haha).

Let me know what you think if you end up renting this!
