There used to be a time when the Oscars loved these big epic disaster movies like this one. The Towering Inferno is about a high rise building that goes up in flames with a big party on the top floor. The rest of the movie is about trying to get those people to safety. I loved this movie because it didn't try to show that people didn't die-- instead it showed how death was a reality.
I love big epic movies-- one of my guilty pleasures just like horror movies. The acting in this movie was great: Steve McQueen, Paul Newman, Wilt Chamberlain, Faye Dunaway, Fred Astair, and William Holden. With all of those great actors this was bond to be a great movie-- which it was. The character development was great because you fell in love with the characters and really cared about what happened to them.
That is what is missing from most disaster movies nowadays-- you don't develop relationships with the characters (like the new Poseidon from a few years ago). This movie showed the point of view of the fire from different points of view-- like the firemen, the party goers, different residents, which helped to create a great movie.
It also shows what people do when they are pushed to the point of death-- which I love, seeing what characters are pushed to do. It is also great to see characters overcome so much and how the human spirit helps people survive and help each other. I love seeing characters work together for the common good (I know that is cheesy but hey I love it).
I definitely recommend this movie back from the hey day of disaster movies in the 1960s-1970s! They make some good ones nowadays (Titanic and Day After Tomorrow) but they cannot compare to those back in the hey day!
Let me know what you think of this movie-- do you love it as much as me? or do you hate it?
