Review: The Secret in their Eyes

Review:
4 out of 5 stars

I will admit I went into watching this Argentina film with a bias of already disliking it. It won best foreign language picture at the Oscars and I didn't see how anything could beat The Prophet which I was in love with! Just like the previous year when Departures won and I felt two others should have but once I saw Departures I loved it just as much.

This movie was really good and really addicting to watch. It is a crime film that is shown through flashbacks. The movie is about a man who tried to solve a film but was stopped by the powers that be so many years later he writes a book about the film and the case is reopened and justice is served in a very unique way. He is also in love with someone he is not allowed to be which plays a pivotal role in how the crime is solved.

The acting is great but what I enjoyed the most was the script and how the story unfolded. I am a sucker for movies with flashbacks-- I enjoy them and how they provide a different way of seeing the story. This is why I love movies like Meminto so much (if you haven't seen that movie-- I highly recommend that too).

This movie definitely deserved to win Best Foreign Language film at the Oscars and if foreign language films were taken more serious at the Oscars it would have been nominated for more (trust me on this one). It won quite a few awards in Spanish speaking countries and made a lot of money in those countries.

Yes you do have to read the subtitles but that doesn't make a movie a bad one-- it just involves a little bit more thinking. The movie helps one to discover what justice is-- and how it is not always kind or just but is usually received in some way.

If you end up seeing this-- let me know what you think! Love it? Hate it?
