Number 18-- The Lives of Others
I gave the clues to my Number 17 favorite movie of all time and no one could guess it. Which I figured. It was made in 2006 and is a foreign language film from Germany. It was nominated and actually WON Best Foreign Language film at the Oscars that year.
It is one of those rare foreign language films I completely forgot I was reading subtitles the entire time. I was so engrossed in the movie that I lost track of time and completely forget I was doing anything else for the two hours.
The movie is about a couple during World War II who are secretly doing things to compromise the government. The latest thing they do is try to publish an article about the suicide rates in Germany that the government is trying to cover up. But in the meantime their apartment is bugged without their knowledge and a man is ordered to listen in for a reason to arrest the man so his superior could have the wife.
Well the man who is listening decides to disobey his orders and it turns into a truly uplifting story that will melt anyone's heart. The ending is absolutely heartbreaking but in a brilliant way. You will leave the movie thinking-- wow people are great!!
You will not recognize any of the actors because they are all German actors who are well known in their country and are truly great actors. They are on the same caliber as many of our best actors (Meryl Streep and Jack Nickelson).
I will admit the ONLY reason I rented it was because I wanted to see what movie had the nerve to beat Pans Labrynth at the Oscars which I thought was great. Then I watched this movie and was like-- for once, the truly great superior movie won. And I LOVED Pans Labrynth because it was a science fiction type movie set during WWII. (I highly recommend that movie too!!)
So please watch this movie-- if you want to see it, I own it!!
CLUES for Number 17--- One of my favorite movies that most critics did not think should have won best picture at the Oscars (even to this day). It was made in the last ten years. It features some of the BEST performances of the careers of Sandra Bullock, Don Cheadle, Thandie Newton, Ryan Philippe and Terrence Howard and yet NONE of them were nominated at the Oscars instead only one actor was nominated (I am not telling you who though). Many of the actors listed above did not have ANY scenes together and most of the actors too substantial pay cuts from what they normally take.
*Side Note-- this is my FAVORITE performance of Sandra Bullock!!!
I would love to see if anyone guesses this movie. I tried to keep the plot under wraps but there is one heart breaking scene where I was in theaters and GASPED and screamed. This is the ONLY time I ever did that in theaters and I was not alone. The scene involves a shooting with a child.
Post your guesses in the comment section!! Hopefully will have Number 17 up sometime next week.
